Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)

When your job takes you into environments with dangerous atmospheres, you may be required to use Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). SCBA would be required for such environments as:

  • Oxygen Deficient
  • Toxic Gases
  • Elevated Temperatures
  • Smoke Filled

These environments are called Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH). To work safely in such an environment with these types of atmospheres, you will need to be proficient in the use, wear and handling of the SCBA unit on your site.

First Response offers training in the safe use and handling of the Scott Air Pak and the MSA units. Participants will be introduced to the hazards associated with IDLH, environments, the types of SCBA units, donning and doffing, emergency operation and care and maintenance of the units.

The training session consists of an academic lesson, followed by a practical session where participants learn to work in buddy groups and enter the area where they may be required to use the unit (if practicable) as a mock practice scenario. Existing emergency response plans will be reviewed and recommendations made if applicable.

This four (4) hour training session delivers comprehensive background information and training on the hazards, limitations and operation of SCBA. The purpose of the certification is to maintain adherence to uniform standards and to develop supervisor and employee competence in the care and use of breathing apparatus.

The MSA and/or Scott Pak units will be used and demonstrated.

Certificate is valid for 1 year (quarterly refresher training is highly recommended to allow participants to maintain a high level of confidence should they be required to use their skills.)For in-house training, we need a quiet room, classroom style with a, TV & VCR, flip chart. We will also need an area for the practical (preferably the space that the participants may be required to enter with the SCBA).

Testing out these skills on a real life emergency situation should not be the time for them to find out whether or not they remember their training!!
